Weasler Engineering recently partnered with a leading combine header manufacturer to enhance the design and performance of their new grain header.
By leveraging our application expertise and innovative driveline solutions, we helped the OEM reduce the number of drive shafts required across the full header platform, while also improving system durability and lowering costs.
Challenges solved with Weasler solutions
Simplify design and reduce costs
Modern grain headers often feature extendable cutter bars to adapt to varying crop conditions. However, this flexibility introduces driveline challenges. Traditional single-telescoping metric drive shafts have limited extension, often requiring multiple shafts to span the full range. Weasler’s double- and triple-telescoping spline drive shafts provide significantly greater extension capability, allowing OEMs to reduce the number of shafts needed. In some cases, this also eliminates the need for additional components, such as secondary drive shafts and pedestal bearings, simplifying the design and reducing costs.
Improve operator comfort, product life, reliability
The side drive of a grain header typically connects to a gearbox, commonly known as a wobble box, and drives the reciprocating motion of the cutter bar. These gearboxes generate high levels of vibration and shock loads, which can damage driveline components. Weasler’s damper yoke effectively absorbs these forces, reducing vibration and torque spikes. The result is improved operator comfort, extended component life and enhanced system reliability overall.
Prevent damage and downtime
To protect critical components from overload damage, Weasler offers a driveline with an integrated ball shear torque limiter. This cost-effective solution disengages when torque exceeds a defined threshold, preventing damage and downtime. The design features a hidden shear bolt that meets ASABE and ISO standards, along with a ball raceway that prevents separation after disconnecting. Options for free motion or overrunning configurations are also available.
